Big 12 Champion Football Game

There may no longer be a Big 12 championship game, but the conference’s championship picture should not be forgotten this championship weekend.

The fate of the Big 12 will be determined between two games with just one guaranteed Bowl Championship Series spot to be filled. No. 6 Oklahoma State (10-1, 7-1 Big 12), No. 9 Baylor (10-1, 7-1 Big 12) and No. 25 Texas (8-3, 7-1 Big 12) all have a chance to lay claim to the Big 12 championship and a trip to a CBS bowl game that goes to the winner! How exciting!

Oklahoma State is the hottest team in the Big 12, and we can't wait to see what they do with the upcoming game.

Big 12 Football History

The Big 12 Conference is the second youngest of the major college athletic conferences in the United States, having formed in 1994 from a merger of one of the oldest conferences, the Big Eight, with four prominent colleges from Texas. From its formation until 2011, its 12 members competed in two divisions. Two charter members left the conference in 2011, and in 2012, two more universities left, while another two joined from other conferences. In 2012, the Big 12 formed an alliance with the Southeastern Conference to host a joint post-season college bowl game between the champions of each conference.

Projecting the Big 12's first-round picks

McShay says it's going to be West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith , who'll be headed to the Buffalo Bills with the eighth pick and the first quarterback drafted. Kiper? He doesn't even have Smith going anywhere in the first round.

Kiper's first Big 12 player taken is a much less pretty position. He's going with converted quarterback Lane Johnson, who emerged as an offensive line standout over the past couple years for Oklahoma. Kiper says the Sooner will be the first Big 12 player taken, all the way down at No. 16 to the St. Louis Rams. McShay has Johnson going even higher, at No. 11, to the San Diego Chargers.

It's going to be a quiet first round for the Big 12 this April without a ton of NFL-bound talent, but we'll see how the leagues' talents fluctuate throughout the draft process with pro days and the combine still to come
